FEAST & FILM!!!! 

Born from the community support generated at the May 10th Hawaii FEAST, Boz Shurr cultivated the June exhibition, The Finch Will Flourish to focus on transforming public and private spaces into places that feel safe and inviting. This current show At Marks Garage is in collaboration with Hawaii FEAST to benefit Child & Family Service, which provides safe spaces for transitioning, women, children and families.

In celebrating the Hawaii FEAST two week run of, The Finch Will Flourish Exhibition, we will be hosting a FEAST and Film Screening Closing pARTy of the award winning film, Janey Makes A Play, a multigenerational story which follows a captivating 90-year-old woman named Janey as she rallies her small town to create a theatre production about the Great Depression amidst the real erosion of the town’s local economy. 

Seemingly from a very far off place, this film shares the importance of multigenerational relationships while supporting and valueing artistic enterprises and endeavors community while facing and healing some of our biggest collective challenges today. The filmmakers and characters have recently appeared on NPR and CW6.

The Hollywood Reporter called Janey an “irrepressible star” and San Diego Magazine deemed the film “funny and heartwarming.” Theater audiences across the country have fallen in love with this inspiring story of growing older with pizazz. It’s a powerful story of community involvement to share with the whole neighborhood. 

Follow 90-year-old Janey as she writes and directs her latest original, socially relevant community theatre production for her small town. Experience the creative process unfold with a cast of colorful townspeople, as they engage with the arts amidst a local economy devastated by the recent recession.

The showcased winning May 10th Hawaii FEAST artist, Boz Shurr along with other participating FEAST artists will be joining the celebration. Talk story session after the film plus ono pupu, libations and music to be had afterwards in the gallery space to enjoy the final day of JuneFEAST Exhibition.

The graduate program at the Department of Art + Art History, University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa is a comprehensive and diverse center for the graduate study of the visual arts and Asian and Pacific art history. The exciting thesis exhibitions are part of a demanding course of study, production, and review. MFA candidates concurrently present new and engaging works that demonstrate each artist’s caliber of ideas, skills, awareness of the global context within which art is created and circulated, and critically engaged artistic practice.

THE 46TH ANNUAL AHA CONTEMPORARY SHOW 2017

Exhibit Open to the Public Monday, August 21 through Friday, September 15, 2017
at 1132 Bishop Street, Lobby Level, Honolulu, Hawai’i

The Association of Honolulu Artists was established in 1926. The Honolulu Art Academy did not exist at that time. With the exception of the Bishop Museum, there was no focal point for the arts. That year a small group of friends eager for cultural exchange gathered to discuss the arts and establish themselves as a membership organization devoted to the support and promotion of the growing arts community. This core group came to be known as “The Association of Honolulu Artists”.

By the 1930’s, the population of Honolulu had grown to a city of over 200,000 residents and the new prestigious Art Academy was visited by almost 50,000 people. AHA was gaining recognition and news coverage on their regularly held art exhibits. Gathering momentum, the periodic art shows that they sponsored grew more frequent and much broader in scope throughout the next few decades. Cash awards for first place winners were replaced with war bonds during the turbulent war years.

Celebrating its 88th Anniversary in 2014, AHA is not only the oldest but also the most diverse art organization in Hawaii. It has had an enormous impact on the public’s enthusiasm and appreciation for the arts. The name was changed from the Association of Honolulu Artists to the Association of Hawaii Artists in order to encompass all islands in the State of Hawaii. After almost eight decades, we are still a vibrant art force in Hawaii. We promote the multimedia arts and its artists members and we build on a foundation where artists of all media can come together for comradeship, education, showmanship, and moral support. We encourage the expression of our diverse cultural heritage and explore themes that reflect the islands’ current issues. We have two jury shows every year along with additional exhibitions that are hosted with the city and the business community. We work to promote art education and growth through AHA’s educational programs, scholarships, workshops and group demonstrations.

Hawaii has a high percentage of the population that characterizes themselves as practicing Artists. Some artist members are professional artists, others practice art as an avocation and serious interest, and some are beginning artists and students. We are accessible. We encourage work in all media and of all interested artists. We enthusiastically invite you to join AHA whether you are an artist or a patron.

When C.W Dickey designed the historic Kaluanui Estate in 1917 for Harry & Ethel Baldwin, he was one of the most celebrated architects of his time. Now, 100 years later, Kaluanui still stands as one of Maui’s most iconic legacy estates still open to the public. Celebrate 100 years of Kaluanui by entering our Centennial 10x10 Exhibition. This exhibition challenges artists to create 2D and 3D works within a defined space of 10”x10”x10”. One hundred pieces will be selected for display in this commemorative exhibition.

Honolulu Printmakers announces it’s 89th Annual Exhibition at Linekona, the Honolulu Museum of Art School. This exhibition presents a carefully juried selection of the best print work from artists around the state of Hawaii working in traditional printmaking media as well as contemporary forms and hybrids.

2017 Juror: Amze Emmons Honolulu Printmakers welcomes artist, educator, and writer Amze Emmons to our studio in Spring 2017 to select work for our Annual Exhibition and to teach a technical workshop in laser cutting for printmakers. Amze’s work has been widely exhibited and evokes a sense of magical/minimal realism informed by architectural illustration, comic books, cartoon language, information graphics, news footage, consumer packaging, and instruction manuals. An Associate Professor at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia, Amze is one of the three co-founders and co-editors of printeresting.org, an influential printmaking blog started in 2008.

2017 Gift Print Artist: Sally French Every year since 1933, the Honolulu Printmakers has commissioned a local printmaker to produce an edition of prints that the organization makes available to its members and the public to raise funds for its activities. Kauai-based artist Sally French is known for her dark humor and exploration of diverse materials. Originally from California, French came to Hawaii in the 1970s and set up a studio that she has maintaned for over 30 years. Having worked and taught throughout the U.S. and completed multiple mural commissions, she is currently focusing on the monotype process, as well as on hosting artist residencies at her Double Dog Dare studio.

This exhibition is free and open to the public. School groups are encouraged to visit and may arrange in advance for a guided tour.
