“Transcestors: Na 'Ulu”
“Transcestors: Na 'Ulu”
Digital Illustration on Cold Press Watercolor Paper, 2023 "An informal term for trans elders, coming from a combination of the words “transgender” and “ancestors.” The term highlights the fact that many trans people do not get to grow old, and celebrates intergenerational relationships. Trancestors can be well-known within the movement or personal to a community, filling a parent or grandparent-like role (see Chosen Family). Trancestors can make an impact during and after their lives, and prove that there is a long history of transgender people throughout the world. The 'Ulu, or breadfruit, is a symbol of plenty or abundance. Hawaiian quilt lore says that those who make Ulu their first quilt will always have abundance. Generations of Hawaiians have regarded ‘ulu as a symbol of resilience, perseverance, and security, Breadfruit is monoecious with male and female flowers developing on the same tree at the end of branches."
