โThe hand is the most frequently symbolized part of the human body. It gives blessing, it is expressive. In general it is strength, power and protection. However, it can just as easily mean generosity, hospitality and stability. It is used in gestures of greeting and friendship (shake hands and shakas). In Shakespeare's Hamlet, Ophelia says, "There's rosemary, that's for remembrance. Pray you, love, remember." It can also be found in Shakespeare's Winter's Tale in Act 4 Scene 4, where Perdita talks about "rosemary and rue." Due to its bitter taste the rue has long been symbolic of sorrow, regret and repentance, hence the expression โyou'll rue the dayโ meaning โyou'll be sorry for this.โ
So a combination of helpfulness and harm. Be careful what you give away moving forward. And be wary of what others give you.โ

In case you are new to this series, the Memento Mori drawings are about the duality of human nature; the nuance and subtlety of our seemingly conflicting emotions and how we will attempt to grieve and grow through the Coronavirus pandemic.
